Days After Gloating Celebration, US Soccer Star Loses Key to NYC
She might be pretty good at taking care of business on the soccer pitch.
But when it comes to taking care of her own valuables, the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team’s Allie Long still has to learn a thing or two.
Starting with, maybe, close your hotel room door.
According to TMZ, Long’s room at the Ritz Carlton hotel in Los Angeles was burglarized Thursday, with the thief or thieves making off with Long’s wedding ring, about $4,000 in cash, as well as the key to the city of New York that Long had received a day earlier in the Big Apple.
Obviously, no one should ever be blamed for being a victim of a crime – the only person truly responsible for a theft is the person who commits it.
But it’s worth noting that Long was not exactly careful with her treasures, from what TMZ reported based on sources in the Los Angeles Police Department.
Apparently, there was more than an element of carelessness involved. Long apparently not only left the door unlocked, she deliberately kept it open, according to TMZ.
“We’re told, she left her door open using the hotel door latch to ensure the door wouldn’t close,” TMZ stated. “We’re told cops are NOT ruling out an inside job. We’re also told the Ritz has really good security — so it’s unlikely it’s some random person who snuck up to her floor.”
Long herself published a Twitter post reporting the theft and asking if there was a way to get a replacement for the key to the city of New York, which was presented to each team member Wednesday by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, according to The Associated Press.

All told, it was a far cry from the celebration that took place on the other side of the country on Wednesday, when team co-captain Megan Rapinoe openly gloated “I deserve this” in front of the whole country.

While there were plenty of sympathetic responses to Long’s “can I have a new key” tweet, more than a few pointed out that Long could have been a little more conscientious.

Before getting her name in the headlines again as a victim of a burglary, Long had stirred controversy with her careless treatment of the American flag with Rapinoe following the women’s World Cup championship win Sunday in France.
And social media users remembered it.

Again, no one should be blamed for being robbed.
But being careful is everyone’s responsibility – especially in an unfamiliar place like a hotel in a city away from home.
The cash is likely long gone, but maybe Long will get both her wedding ring and the New York City key back.
Hopefully, she’ll be more careful with both in the future.
When it comes to taking care of valuables like a wedding ring – or a key to America’s largest city – being an adult means being responsible.
