First Lady Melania Trump Will Hold Russia-Ukraine Peace Talks at White House After Brokering Ceasefire

First Lady Melania Trump plans to meet Thursday at the White House with representatives from Russia and Ukraine.

The meeting is meant to extend a short, localized pause in fighting that she helped arrange last week around the southern Ukrainian city of Oleshky.

Her office said she would personally host the two sides and called the gathering a rare moment in U.S. diplomatic history, according to a report from the New York Post.

It did not identify the Russian or Ukrainian officials expected to attend.

The peace arrangement covered Oleshky and nearby parts of the Kherson region.

It temporarily stopped military operations so that aid could reach the Russian-occupied city and residents could leave.

Many of those who departed were older people who had gone without steady access to medicine, food, and clean water. About 800 people were able to depart while the pause in hostilities lasted.

According to her office, Melania Trump and one of her aides dealt directly with leaders in both countries to set the rules for the pause.

The office said she opened the talks and got the sides to agree on what the effort would seek to achieve, when it would run, and how it would work.

She already had a line of contact with Russian and Ukrainian officials from earlier work aimed at returning Ukrainian children taken to Russia.

That effort, which started after she wrote to President Vladimir Putin in 2025, has led to the return of 34 children in several transfers.

Thursday’s meeting is intended to keep that contact going.

Wider talks aimed at ending the war have faltered over issues of territory, including Russian claims in the Donetsk region that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected.

Separate U.S. envoys continue working on a broader settlement, while Melania Trump’s role so far has stayed focused on specific humanitarian steps.

Her office has not released a detailed plan for the White House session beyond her intention to host the representatives.

The first lady’s office has presented the Oleshky pause as the product of her own outreach and direct involvement with both sides.

Officials in Kyiv and Moscow confirmed that the pause occurred and that aid deliveries and evacuations took place.
