It’s no secret that a good percentage of children fight their parents when it comes to eating healthy foods, namely vegetables.
But why? Is it a texture issue? Is it the color that turns kids off? What is it about vegetables that kids are so against?
According to a report CBS News in 2017, it may have something to do with the foods that are introduced at an early age.
“American toddlers are more likely to eat french fries than green vegetables on any given day,” CBS News reported. “…Many young kids also go without any vegetables at all.”
The outlet went on to explain that eating habits start early. If children eat poorly when they’re babies and toddlers, it’s more likely they’ll continue with the same bad habits as adults.
Perhaps the reason our little ones are so averse to healthy choices is because we don’t offer them often enough.
Don’t get me wrong, I give my kids gummy fruit snacks and Graham crackers as much as the next mom. They’re quick, easy, and portable.
Unfortunately, these types of sugary, processed foods may be affecting kids’ tastes and preferences. The Centers for Disease Control suggests that parents ought to serve fruits and vegetables at every meal and snack time.
The Food & Brand Lab at Cornell University also notes that a simple but effective way to encourage vegetable consumption during childhood is to let kids grow their own vegetables.
That’s right. The study done by the university showed that kids who tended a garden were more likely to eat the vegetables they grew.
What a great idea! I might have to try that! Because we all know what happens when kids refuse to eat their veggies.
A lot of tears and gags, of course. If your kids still won’t budge when it comes to their friendly neighborhood greens, don’t let it get you down.

While some, rare parents, might have a child who loves vegetables, you just might have a picky eater on your hands. Most parents do. Thankfully there are tons of sneaky ways to get those vegetables in undercover.
Try searching recipes for butternut squash mac and cheese, scrambled eggs Dr. Seuss style (green eggs colored with spinach), or sneaky smoothies that taste like a dessert but are actually packed with healthy stuff.
Or just do what these parents did and offer broccoli and squash as is. But make sure you record the reactions. You may just have the next viral kid video!
