Ilhan Omar's Dad Not Her Only Link to Genocide - Hidden Brother and Sister Also Tied to Mass-Murdering Warlord
There are multiple connections to genocide in the family of Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, according to a new report.
Omar’s father, Nur Omar Mohamed, also known as Nur Said Elmi Mohamed, has long been linked to a genocidal regime in Somalia that collapsed at the time Omar and her family fled Somalia, as noted by the New York Post.
Now, sources indicate that Mohamed Nur Said Elmi, a political activist, and Leila Nur Said Elmi, 53, are no only siblings Omar keeps hidden, but also supporters of a Somali warlord, according to the New York Post.
Her brother frequently travels to Somalia, the report said, also noting that he and his London-based sister are linked to war criminal Mohamed Said Hersi, known as “Morgan.”
In 1988, while Omar’s father was serving in the military under dictator Siad Barre, “Morgan” helped massacre a rival clan to support the government.
Up to 200,000 people were killed in the genocide.
The New York Post said that a January 2024 image showed Omar’s brother and sister grinning as they posed with the former architect of ethnic cleansing.
Further, the report said, Omar’s brother posted a tribute to the “butcher of Hargeisa” after the warlord’s death in 2025, noting that the warlord had been close to their father.
As noted by the New York Post, Mohamed Haji Ingiriis, an Oxford University historian and researcher, said that Omar’s father “misrepresented himself as a refugee” when he was in fact a perpetrator of the chaos in the country.
While Omar has described her father as an “educator” who fled Somalia for the United States, Ingiriis said that he “was a full colonel” in Barre’s dictatorship, the New York Post reported.
“Nur Said was a military officer who was loyal to the regime until the end,” Ingiriis said, referring to Omar’s father.
“He was part and parcel of those who caused and created the mayhem they ‘fled’ to live comfortably in the United States,” he added.
🇺🇸🇸🇴 ILHAN OMAR’S FAMILY TIES TO SOMALIA’S OLD REGIME SPARK NEW QUESTIONS
Ilhan Omar rose to fame as the refugee who escaped war and made it to Congress.
But newly uncovered photos and archives suggest her family may not have fled from Somalia’s brutal regime – they may have been part of it.
Her late father served as a colonel in the Somali army under dictator Siad Barre, whose regime carried out mass killings in the 1980s.
That makes her backstory more complicated than she lets on.
A resurfaced video shows a man resembling Omar’s father discussing brutal tactics.
There’s no proof he committed war crimes, but some say he was close enough to know what was happening.
Photos also show Omar’s siblings with General Morgan – known as the “Butcher of Hargeisa” – and Omar herself at a 2022 event where Morgan was present.
One relative even referred to him as “uncle.”
Omar hasn’t commented on the new findings, and her silence has led some to question how she can call for accountability abroad without addressing her own family’s history.

Ingiriis said Nur received training in either the former Soviet Union or Egypt.
“He only fled when the dictatorship fell in 1991,” Ingiriis added. “He was the beneficiary of the military regime and should not have been given asylum whatsoever.”

The New York Post reported that Omar’s Somali supporters are threatening anyone who speaks out against her, citing a source it did not name.
“I feel very threatened for simply disagreeing with anything to do with Ilhan Omar,” the source said.
“If you don’t support her, then these people online really want to make you pay. I am fearful of my life every single day. I wish I never said anything about her.”
“I get death wishes every day, and I am afraid to leave my home. On the rare occasions I do, I am verbally abused or, worse, actually physically assaulted,” the source said.
The source said one Omar supporter told him, “You are going to be killed,” and called him a “snake.”
