Firefighter Says 'Good Lord' Told Him To Adopt Pup He Rescued from Underneath Heavy Rocks
When you lose a pet, it can be hard to decide when to bring a new one into the family. The loss of the previous one still lingers and you want to make sure you find the perfect addition.
Three years had passed for Fire Captain Paul Bryant since his family had lost their dog. The firefighter with the North Charleston Fire Department said that nothing really fit, so they had been a dogless household.
But then someone made it pretty clear that Bryant was supposed to have a dog now, and Bryant believes this pup was a literal Godsend.
On March 30, he and some others responded to a call claiming some bikers had heard a crying puppy. They tracked the cries to a hill made of concrete slabs and rocks, and found a hole where the cries were coming from.
When the firefighters arrived, they took stock of the scene and planned the rescue carefully, so as not to have the debris collapse on the puppy and cause even more trouble.
Taking a shovel, Bryant carefully cleared away some of the rock and dirt, trying to get the hole wide enough so he could free the puppy. After a bit of work and maneuvering, out popped the puppy into the fireman’s arms.
“Then once we got him out, he was like, ‘Hey, how are you?'” Bryant said, according to WMC5. “It was just an absolutely gorgeous experience.”
The puppy was looked at by a vet and found to have no major issues. Then he found his way to the Charleston Animal Society to be prepped for adoption.
“Puppy rescue today by Engine 201 Captain Bryant and NCPD,” the North Charleston Fire Department posted on March 30. “This little pup was found by some bike riders who heard the puppy crying beneath a pile of rocks.”
No one claimed the puppy, and Bryant was convinced the dog needed to be his.
“I said, ‘Oh, no,’ this was meant to be, he’s my dog and he’s coming home with me,” Bryant said. “And this was just absolutely incredible, doing the rescue, and the good Lord just said, ‘This is your dog.'”
“How can you not carry that dog home?” Bryant later said when he arrived at the shelter where the pup was being held. “He’s just adorable.”
Now the little dog has a great home with a caring family who picked the perfect name for him: Rocky.
