NYT Writer Laments Anti-Abortion Laws Are Informed by 'Morality'
Tuesday’s blue wave didn’t just affect the U.S. Congress. State legislatures and governor’s mansions changed hands, too, and that has serious implications for plenty of people — including the most vulnerable, the unborn.
To that end, I give you one of the people who would most like to change abortion laws in the United States to not only go back to the good old days of Roe v. Wade, but to go even further: Lisa Lerer of The New York Times.
In October, Lerer wrote a story claiming that because Idaho banned killing babies in the womb, OB-GYNs were fleeing the state. This should have said a lot about the state of OB-GYNs in post-Roe America and why the Dobbs decision — and subsequent abortion bans — were necessary.
Not so for Lerer, who didn’t question why “OB-GYNs have been fleeing the state in extraordinary numbers” simply because third-party abortionists can’t kill babies in the womb, but instead passed on claims from hospital administrators that “women facing life-threatening complications are loaded into a helicopter and flown out of state for treatment that OB-GYNs in Idaho are not allowed to administer.”
This is what happens when you don’t let people murder the unborn, folks: Women don’t get the healthcare they need! If I had a nickel for every time I heard that threadbare excuse, I could pay the salaries of a cadre of pro-life OB-GYNs to relocate to Idaho posthaste.
But I digress, because this somehow gets worse.
Appearing on PBS’s “Amanpour and Company” last month, Lerer said the quiet part out loud: The left really wishes we would take the whole “morality” thing out of legislating whether or not we can butcher the unborn.
Speaking of abortion bans, Lerer said that “these laws were not really written often with a sense of science or women’s health or, you know, medical advisories.”
“And so, I was curious what the impact were of these bans beyond just abortion and abortion rights. And so, I went to Idaho because what happened in Idaho is since they had passed their ban in 2022, about a third of the OB-GYNs in that state had left or stopped practicing or retired.”

She insisted that none of these OB-GYNs were doing “elective” abortions, but instead “medically indicated” ones.
“I think the intention was, of course, as all these laws intend to do, to ban abortion,” she continued.
“I just think abortion exists as an issue in this sort of morass of morality and religion and politics. And it’s become sort of disconnected from the actual thing that’s about, which is that abortion is a medical procedure, whatever your feelings about it is that, it is something that involves medication or surgery. And I think that disconnect is what led to this outcome in Idaho.”

Imagine: People are banning abortion because of the “morass” of religious virtue teaching us that murder is wrong and that the unborn are humans, too, and so that goshdarn “morality” gets in the way of abortion on demand, which is what Roe mandated that states provide.
These people actually say these things without realizing how these words escaping from their mouths sound to people whose brains don’t think like theirs.
Thankfully, Lerer’s beloved pro-abortion activists in Idaho were deeply disappointed when voters rejected Proposition 1, which would have enshrined abortion rights in the state constitution.
We are calling it! Proposition 1 in Idaho has FAILED!
Abortion will REMAIN ILLEGAL in the Gem State!

However, what happens in other states remains to be seen after Tuesday’s blue wave. After all, the people in charge now are the same people who call murder “women’s healthcare” and want to untangle that “morass of morality and religion and politics” from the right to sentence another innocent life to death in the womb.
These are the stakes, these are the consequences, and Christian conservatives must never forget them.
