Former NFL player arrested again for violating restraining order
Aldon Smith should be in the prime of his career.
Smith, 28, is a former First-Team All-Pro defensive end who helped lead the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl.
Instead, Smith’s downward spiral shows no end in sight.
His latest arrest comes after he allegedly violated a restraining order.
That order was issued following his previous arrest for allegedly beating up his fiancée in March.
Smith surrendered himself to authorities Friday morning, according to TMZ.
The former Pro Bowler’s legal troubles started more than 5 years ago when he was arrested for DUI in 2012.
The following year, he rammed his car into a tree while under the influence of marijuana.
Just three weeks after that incident, he was arrested again, this time for possession of three assault weapons, which authorities discovered while investigating a house party that became violent.
Smith was suspended for nine games at the start of the 2014 season for substance abuse, and he was eventually cut by the 49ers the next summer.
The Oakland Raiders decided to take a chance on the defensive end, and he ended up playing in nine games with the Raiders in 2015, registering 3.5 sacks.
But after the domestic violence charge in March, the Raiders released the talented but troubled lineman.
The legal troubles have taken a financial toll on Smith, as he is reportedly being sued by American Express for non-payment of a bill that totals more than $118,000.
It’s been a sharp fall from grace for Smith, who set a team record with 19.5 sacks his rookie season with San Francisco.
His 42 sacks in his first three seasons are the third-most in NFL history, trailing only Hall of Famers Reggie White and Derrick Thomas.
All of that seems like so long ago.
