Age 12 Girl Saves 10-Month-Old Sister from Fiery Crash, While Mother Trapped Inside
Rebecca Drahm and her two daughters, 12-year-old Tahlia and 10-month-old Avia, ended up in a car wreck after a driver failed to yield and slammed into her car.
Drahm was unable to move due to the wreckage, and she soon feared for her baby’s life. Little Avia’s heart stopped beating in the wreck, and her mother couldn’t do anything to help her.
With a broken nose and sprained ankle, Tahlia sprung into action and pulled her baby sister out of the smoking car as they waited for help to arrive.
The three of them were taken to the Royal Darwin Hospital in Northern Territory, Australia, on June 23 of last year.
Avia was unresponsive when they arrived and was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit. She had a traumatic brain injury, abdominal bleeding and severe bruising.
Thankfully, the doctors were able to help bring the little baby back to life.
Avia and her mother had many months of recovery and treatment to go through. Drahm herself had broken ribs, a broken back in four places and a ruptured spleen.
It was because of brave Tahlia that Avia is alive today, and Drahm couldn’t be prouder.
“I was terrified seeing Aiva lifeless and not being able to do a thing. Words can’t describe how proud of Tahlia we are,” she said. “She is so brave … not many adults would have been able to do what she did. She’s baby Aiva’s superhero.”
On Thursday, Tahlia was honored for her bravery by St. John Ambulance CEO Judith Barker.
For her bravery, she deserved it.
“Tahlia conducted her own triage of the situation, assessing the person most in need as being her little sister, recognising that the aid required was beyond her knowledge and training, but retained the presence of mind to seek further assistance,” Barker said.
“Fortunately, it is a rare thing for one to need to take immediate responsive action to save a sibling, so we at St John Ambulance are proud to have played a part in this amazing rescue,” she added.
Drahm and her daughters have recovered since their wreck.
Drahm will always be grateful and proud of Tahlia for being able to see her little sister needed her help the most that day.
