Pit Bull Tries Dragging 7-Month-Old Baby by Diaper to Safety After Fire Erupts

Share

Pit bulls are a divisive breed of dog. They have both die-hard supporters and people who genuinely believe that they have an instinct for killing.

They are built to be tough dogs. They have dense bodies and strong jaws — but those can be used for many different purposes, both positive and negative.

One pit bull used her imposing set of chompers and strength to drag a baby off of a bed — but it was because she was trying to save the child.

Sasha, an 8-month-old pit bull, first alerted her owner to a dangerous situation when she began making noise and acting strangely.

Nana Chaichanhda, mother to the child and owner of Sasha, said she knew something was up, so she went to the door where Sasha was making a ruckus.

“I open it and she runs in and starts barking at me like crazy and I was like, ‘OK, this is weird. This is not like her.'”

That’s when Chaichanhda discovered the cause for her dog’s distress. The fourplex they lived in was on fire.

Thinking of her child, she raced to grab her 7-month-old, but when she got to the room, Sasha had already beaten her to the punch.

“She had already had my baby by the diaper and was dragging her off the bed. I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, what are you doing?'”

Because the fire started early in the morning, Chaichanhda could have slept through it, and lost both her child and her own life.

Fortunately Sasha warned them in time, and they were able to escape with their lives, even though they lost their possessions.

“It meant a lot,” Chaichanhda said. “I owe her everything. If it wasn’t for her, I would have still been in bed and things could have taken a worse turn.”

Other dogs have shown heroic actions like Sasha’s, but Sasha was still just a puppy when she saved her family.

The fact that she got Chaichanhda’s attention, raced protectively to the baby just a month younger than herself, and then grabbed onto the baby’s diaper to move her shows that she’s insistent but gentle, and a major asset to her family.

A GoFundMe has since been set up for the Chaichanhda, her husband, her children, and her sister and sister’s boyfriend who all lived in the home.

Fortunately they are able to live with relatives nearby, and two of the homes in the fourplex are still standing but without electricity. Thanks to Sasha, they still have the most important thing: family.
