Bigger Than the Super Bowl: Philadelphia Eagles Are Bible-Believing Brothers
Immediately after winning Super Bowl LII, Eagles Quarterback Nick Foles had some stunning words. “All glory to God,” he said.
It was a sentiment shared by everyone on the team, including Coach Doug Pederson, who immediately praised Jesus upon winning the Lombardi Trophy.
The Eagles, long known as underdogs, have carved out another identity for themselves this season: believers.
Their season, like the Super Bowl itself, was filled with ups and downs. Key players, such as starting QB Carson Wentz, left the field with season-ending injuries.
Many doubted the Eagles would have a successful season, and few thought they’d make it to the big game. The team, however, kept the faith from the very beginning.
They began the season in a prayer-filled manner. According to CBN News, “At the start of the season, Foles and teammates Zach Ertz, Trey Burton, Carson Wentz, and Chris Maragos released a Bible study on humility and surrender.”
Over the course of the season, the team continued to live their faith. The Washington Post reports that “Eagles players even held baptisms in the team’s cold tub and at a hotel pool.”
In November, the team released a video called “The Locker Room’s Binding Force.”
As CBN news explains, the video is “a look at the Christian faith of three players and how Christianity is a big part of the team’s unity.”
During the season, the team held several Bible study sessions a week and constantly discussed matters of faith in the locker room.
These discussions helped the team remember what was really important.
“I think the biggest thing that we’re always challenging each other with is just to not lose sight of the bigger picture,” Wentz said in “The Locker Room’s Binding Force.”
“I think wins, losses, highs, lows, everything that comes with this game, it’s so easy to take your mind and your eyes off of the ultimate prize, and that’s living for the Lord,” he said.
Now, in a time of great celebration, the Lord remains at the forefront of their minds.
After winning the Super Bowl, Eagles teammates immediately dropped to their knees to give thanks to God.
