Look: MLB security makes NFL play on fan who ran onto field

Share

Linebacker Roquan Smith was drafted eighth overall by the Chicago Bears, but who knew the former Georgia Bulldog doubled as a White Sox security guard?

That’s how it appeared during the White Sox’s Sunday game against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Smith may not have actually been there, but a security guard did his best impersonation of the linebacker after a fan ran onto the field.

The fan gave security quite a workout as White Sox center fielder Adam Engel did his best to avoid the scrum. It wasn’t until three of the security guards surrounded the fan that Terry Tate Office Linebacker emerged and took him to the ground.

The fan had to have known that he would get caught and removed from the stadium. Just think about it — how many times have you seen a fan run onto the field and then get away?

Another fan posted an alternate angle of the chase and tackle from his viewpoint behind the first-base line.

The best part of that video is the adjacent fan saying, “You gotta send that to me,” as he also wants the video of the takedown.

One fan didn’t have video of the chase, but he did capture the moment of impact between the security guard and the fan.

White Sox security has definitely improved its fan-on-the-field tackling over the last decade, as the security guard got in perfect position to deliver the hit.

That wasn’t the case during a game in 2007, as a fan outran security after crashing the outfield, forcing them to use the drag tackle to bring him down.

Should fans who run out onto the field be arrested?

Heads-up tackle vs. drag tackle? In a football game, that’s the difference between third down and four vs. third down and two.

As for the actual game that took place on Sunday, the White Sox prevailed 6-1 to take two of three games vs. the Brewers, who have the National League’s best record.

Chicago improved to 18-38, which still has them in the cellar of the AL Central. The White Sox’s .321 winning percentage is second-worst in all of baseball, trailing only the Orioles (.293).
