Manning: The Truth About Why Dems Demand Endless War in Ukraine Is So Much Worse Than Almost Anyone Imagines

Elon Musk is unendingly interesting, but one of the most fascinating things to watch is when he gets emotional.

In an interview last year, he did just that, showing visible contempt for the people who demand that the West (and America specifically) dump endless amounts of money into a Slavic war between Russia and Ukraine.

Take a listen.

The other person with a massive platform who has said the same thing is Donald Trump. As far as I can tell, no prominent Democrat has been willing to say the same thing: The killing has to stop.

ABC accidentally supported Elon’s sentiments earlier this week, though, with a piece on a Ukrainian vet made a quadruple amputee by a Russian drone.

In the piece, Ruslan Knysh, 20, details how he lost both arms and legs.

To revisit Elon, we should all ask “for what?”

The answer to that question is tied up in the very heart of the Trump-era Democratic Party.

Trump was the only recent president under whom Putin did not expand Russia’s borders. Joe Biden’s terminally weak foreign policy, however, failed to deter Putin, as had Barack Obama’s, resulting in Russia taking Crimea.

Biden realized too late that instead of impeaching Trump over a phone call related to our selling Javelin missiles to Ukraine (which Trump wanted to do, but Obama wouldn’t — talk about irony), he should actually have been establishing deterrence.

With the Russian bear already loose, though, Biden turned to one of the most tattered, dog-eared pages in the Dem playbook: Throw money at the problem … preferably money we don’t have.

Thanks to that decision, what would have been a few weeks of fighting and a few thousand deaths has turned into nearly five years of killing and 750 miles of no-man’s-land border battles and trenches.

The war Putin launched and Biden failed to prevent has killed or injured 1.4 million Russians and likely more than 700,000 Ukrainians. Ten million Ukrainians have been displaced.

And the cycle just continues as the U.S. pumps more money, but you don’t have to believe me. Just listen to Knysh, who trains at a facility called “Kill House.” After his training is complete, on a good day, he will separate dozens of Russians from their own arms and legs — the same thing done to him.

How is it possibly moral for us to pour U.S. tax dollars that we are 100 percent certain will result in more horrific deaths, when there is simply not a clear national interest, not enough money, and clearly absolutely no way for Ukraine to fully repulse Russia? How is it moral?

No one on the left in America (along with many on the GOP side) seems able to answer that question with anything more coherent than “we should spill endless Ukrainian (and Russian) blood because Putin is bad and Europe is our ally.”

OK … I guess.

But since 1900, Ukraine’s sovereignty and borders have changed 10 times or more, depending on how finely you parse things. Why in the world are we taking a moral stand on the 2022 version of those borders? Why didn’t we treat the borders the same way in, say, 1921, 1940, or 1954?

Here’s a tougher question for Democrats: Why didn’t we go all in in 2014 when, under Barack Obama and John Kerry, Putin invaded Ukraine and took Crimea for himself? Why wasn’t that worth the fight, but the Donbas in 2022 was?

There are several reasons, but the core reason is so sick you just can’t imagine.

The core reason is that Democrats forgot that the entire Russiagate narrative was made up … by them. And they now navigate by syllogism, determining Trump’s position and then taking the opposite position.

That’s why Obama didn’t act in 2014, but Joe Biden did in 2022. Democrats think backing Ukraine hurts Putin, which thwarts Trump, because of a linkage they themselves created.

Douglas Adams wrote about a fictional animal so mind-bogglingly stupid that it assumes if you can’t see it, then it can’t see you. Read that again. That’s the level Dems are operating on here.

The proof is in their own policies and rhetoric before Trump arrived.

In 2009, Hillary Clinton presented Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov with a symbolic red “reset” button (which hilariously was misspelled in Russian as “overload” — think about that for a second).

The point was to warm relations and make nice. Détente 2.0.

Three years later, in 2012, Dems mocked Mitt Romney mercilessly when he cast Russia as the U.S.’s most dangerous geopolitical rival.

That’s all now reversed, because they believed their own Russiagate lie. And for that lie, millions have been killed or injured like Knysh.

There are other reasons, too — Euro-pusillanimity, belief in international law, and viewing politics as victim/victimizer morality. But on the whole, this is about Dems believing their own Russiagate lie.

I closed out an article the other day saying that truth matters and lies kill. I probably should have saved that line for this one, because where else today is that truer than in the Kyiv killing fields?

At its core, the answer to Elon’s question, “For what?” turns out to be Democrats’ own lie meant to write on the public’s consciousness: “Orange man bad.”

What a waste of life. What a lie.
