Trump Donated Major Part of 3rd Quarter Salary for Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism Research
I will be the first to tell you that nobody, not even President Donald Trump, should be above reproach or beyond criticism.
The deification of any man, even one whose presidency you may have voted for, is a dangerously slippery slope and something everyone should avoid.
That being said, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Trump might very well be the most criticized president in history, with the media showing a disingenuous and unfair double standard for him — especially compared to his predecessor, former President Barack Obama.
Despite the fact that Trump has given more access to the media than Obama, the current president still faces surreal scrutiny from much of the media over the most asinine of issues.
Misspell a word on Twitter? Have a preference for fast food? Ask for two scoops of ice cream instead of one? Those all got breathless coverage from the leftist media as a way to criticize and attack the president.
But when the president actually does something good, it’s often tucked away into a corner and barely gets a fraction of the coverage that a negative story would.
Take, for instance, this latest Associated Press report detailing something pretty awesome that the president did with his presidential salary.
Per the AP, Trump donated $100,000, which is his salary from the third-quarter of 2018, to help support alcoholism research and alcohol-related problems.
As part of his pledge to not accept the annual presidential salary of $400,000, Trump donated $100,000 to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.
Full disclosure, I have close friends and family who have dealt with this terrible problem, so this donation probably hits a little close to home.
Not saying that I have very much in common with the president at all, but the issue hits close to home for Trump as well.
As the AP notes, Trump’s older brother, Fred Jr., died in 1981 after a long battle with alcoholism.
That experience is often cited as why Trump has such an aversion to alcohol.
Ultimately, it’s just an awesome gesture.
As I mentioned above, Trump should never be above criticism. The man is not perfect. The wall he has so boastfully promised is still not built and he could probably stand to cut back on his Twitter habits.
But helping a good cause is still helping a good cause, and that should be commended.
This is hardly the first time Trump has donated his presidential salary to noble causes. By law, Trump must be paid his salary despite his pledge not to accept it.
In response, Trump has donated his quarterly salaries to the departments of Education, Health and Human Services, Transportation and Veterans Affairs, as well as several others. They have all accepted Trump’s donations.
