Watch: MLB player collapses mid-game, rushed to the hospital

There was a scary moment in Friday night’s game between the Astros and White Sox in Chicago.

White Sox relief pitcher Danny Farquhar, after pitching two-thirds of an inning in the top of the sixth in relief of starter James Shields, collapsed in the dugout.

The 31-year-old reliever was immediately attended to by team medical personnel and on-site emergency medical technicians.

He regained consciousness after apparently fainting and was taken to Rush University Medical Center for further treatment and testing, team officials said in a statement.

The White Sox announced Saturday afternoon that Farquhar had suffered a brain hemorrhage.

The testing at RUMC “revealed that a ruptured aneurysm caused the brain bleed,” the team said. Farquhar is “stable but in critical condition in the neurosurgical ICU unit,” it said.

The White Sox asked fans to “keep Danny and his family in your positive thoughts and prayers.”

His teammates and coaches expressed their fears about Farquhar after the game Friday.

“It’s really scary, man,” Sox reliever Aaron Bummer said, according to the Associated Press. “He’s in our thoughts and prayers. Hopefully everything is OK. We have a lot of questions and not many answers. But we can hope for the best and hope that he’s back with us tomorrow.”

“It takes your breath away a little bit,” White Sox manager Rich Renteria said after the game, according to the Chicago Tribune. “One of your guys is down there and you have no idea what’s going on. The medical staff was there right away the whole time and they called into the EMTs, and somebody was already caring for him before they even got up.”

“I think everybody was allowing the people to take care of him,” Renteria added. “Everybody else just surrounded him to make sure they had the space to do what they needed to do.”

On Saturday, the White Sox put Farquhar on the 10-day DL.

The Astros won Friday’s game 10-0, handing the White Sox their fifth straight loss.

The two teams play the second game of their three-game series Saturday night.
