Ex-Utah State Football Player Convicted of Rape Charges

Share

Torrey Green, who played linebacker at Utah State University, was convicted on Friday of raping five women and sexually assaulting a sixth.

Green was found guilty on a total of eight charges including five counts of rape, one count of object rape, one count of forcible sexual abuse and one misdemeanor charge of sexual battery.

None of the six women knew each other, but they all gave similar stories of how Green got to know them and then took advantage of them.

A jury deliberated for 16 hours over two days before a judge read the verdict in a courtroom just 30 minutes from where Green played at Utah State.

Green was a member of the Aggies football team from 2011 to 2015 and started 10 games during his tenure. He accumulated seven sacks in his career.

He signed as an undrafted free agent with the Atlanta Falcons in 2016, lasting about three months with the team before it was revealed that he was under investigation by the Cache County attorney’s office in Utah.

Green was then immediately released by the Falcons, with team owner Arthur Blank taking a strong stand.

“We don’t want anybody connected to the organization that has those kinds of accusations around them,” Blank said in 2016, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “The player was cut. We found out about it (Wednesday) night. The player was cut (Thursday) morning. The decision was made (Wednesday) night. The coach spoke to the team (Thursday) morning. They understand it. We understand, and we’ve moved on.”

Green’s employment with the Falcons was brought up by his defense attorney, who argued that the accusers were seeking his attention after he signed with an NFL team.

The defense attorney also brought up that the alleged incidents happened from 2013 to 2015, yet many of the victims delayed reporting the crimes until Green became a pro in 2016.

Green always maintained that the sex was consensual with four of the women and that he never had any sexual encounters with the other two women.

But in the end, the similar testimonies from the women were too hard for the jury to ignore.

The Cache County deputy attorney said he was relieved with the verdict.

“There were convictions for all six of these survivors,” Spencer Walsh said after the verdicts were read. “We’re very happy about that.”

Walsh also said that prosecutors plan to seek a combined prison sentence of at least 25 years for Green without him receiving credit for the two years he’s spent in jail awaiting trial.

Green was acquitted on three of the 11 total charges levied against him: another count of rape, aggravated kidnapping and another count of forcible sexual abuse.

In addition to this case, there is another rape case against Green that is open, but no trial date has been set.
