Dog Left Tied to a Tree, Handwritten Note Attached to Collar
Many stray dogs found roaming the streets are missing pets. Usually, they have run away from home or somehow become separated from their handlers.
Other times, these homeless dogs are left abandoned and rejected. Prince George County Animal Shelter in Virginia has witnessed a few of these cases, including one involving a 2-year-old dog named Zeus.
The husky and black lab mix was found stranded near a wooded area on Feb. 10. He was left tied to a tree with only one bag of food.
A handwritten note was also attached to his collar. The owner claimed this was her only option to finding him a better home.
“I am a very good dog,” it read. “I am a very good dog. My owner just can’t afford me anymore. She tried to find me a home but nobody would take me.”
The note then described how well-behaved Zeus was with children and cats. He had already been neutered, but was not up to date on his shots.
“I am still very young and energetic,” the note said. “Please find me a good home to go to.”
Then, the note ended with regret. “I hate to do this but I just can’t afford him anymore,” the owner said.
“Zeus was completely failed by his last owner,” the shelter posted. “Can you be Zeus’ forever family?” And thankfully for Zeus, his story went viral on the shelter’s Facebook page.
By Feb. 13, he was adopted by Katherine McFarland Elliott, who posed in a picture with the loving dog.
“Zeus has found his [fairytale] home at last,” the post read. “Zeus’ new family are wonderful pet owners who will give Zeus the kind of home that loves him for life this time.”
When posting Zeus’ success story, the shelter also announced that no matter what the circumstance, they were working to stop animal abandonment in its tracks.
“We are always here to assist whether it be with resources that can help financially, with feeding your pet, or even with surrendering him or her to us,” they wrote.
Fans of his story were thrilled to see that life was finally changing around for the young pup. “So happy for a happy ending!!” one person commented.
Elliot also responded on how well-mannered Zeus was with her children. “My kids and Zeus became instant friends!!!” she wrote.
