Scientists Discover Dark Secret in Peru, Largest Known Child Sacrifice in History
This should shatter one liberal myth.
For progressives, it’s practically an article of faith that the Spanish colonizers of South American destroyed a venerable native culture when they introduced Christianity — by force — into the New World.
But a mass grave reported this week in what is now Peru shows just what kind of barbarity was being practiced before the conquistadors ever showed up.
According to National Geographic, an archaeological dig in northwestern Peru, near the modern town of Trujillo has turned up evidence of a massive, ritualistic sacrifice of children — apparently to appease the gods of climate change.
The discovery was earth-shaking, even in a part of the world where adult human sacrifice — barbaric enough — was known to be practiced among the native religions, Tulane University anthropologist John Verano told National Geographic.
Child sacrifice on a mass scale takes things to a different level.
As the magazine put it:
“While incidents of human sacrifice among the Aztec, Maya, and Inca have been recorded in colonial-era Spanish chronicles and documented in modern scientific excavations, the discovery of a large-scale child sacrifice event in the little-known pre-Columbian Chimú civilization is unprecedented in the Americas — if not in the entire world.”
“I, for one, never expected it,’” Verano told the magazine. “And I don’t think anyone else would have, either.”
The details are disturbing. About 550 years ago, according to the archaeological team, 140 children — aged 5 to 14 — were murdered at roughly the same time at the site known as “Las Llamas.” The remains of about 200 llamas — domesticated as pack animals — were also found.
All — children and animal — had been killed the same way, National Geographic reported:
“The skeletal remains of both children and animals show evidence of cuts to the sternum as well as rib dislocations, which suggest that the victims’ chests were cut open and pulled apart, perhaps to facilitate the removal of the heart…
“A lack of hesitant (‘false start’) cuts indicates that they were made by one or more trained hands.”
“It is ritual killing, and it’s very systematic,” Verano told the magazine.
While physical evidence can answer the question of how the killings were conducted, the question of why requires more conjecture.
But according to National Geographic, researchers theorize that the slaughter took place during a period of intense rains caused by the natural weather phenomenon known as El Nino.
Haagen Klaus, an anthropology professor at George Mason University in Virginia, who isn’t associated with the Las Llamas dig but has excavated other child sacrifice sites in the region, said the Chimu civilization might have turned to sacrificing children because adult victims weren’t getting the desired results.
“They may have seen that [adult sacrifice] was ineffective,” he told National Geographic. “The rains kept coming. Maybe there was a need for a new type of sacrificial victim.”
Now, it’s true, of course, that many millions of children have died in the course of humanity’s wars. And tragic as it is, evidence of the deaths of 140 children half a millennium ago on the west coast of South America doesn’t have much impact on the world we’re living in today.
But it’s another reminder of the levels of barbarism humanity is capable of. And it’s a reminder that it was the coming of Christianity to the world — spread through the Roman Empire — that made events like this mass sacrifice a matter of ancient history instead of contemporary life.
That doesn’t change the fact that hundreds of thousands of children are destroyed in their mother’s wombs in the United States every year — more than 300,000 per year by the abortion mill Planned Parenthood alone.
But those are killings without the veneer of divine command. Even “pro-choice” groups know what they’re doing is facilitating a mother’s convenience in ending a pregnancy, not fulfilling a religious obligation. They can claim it’s a “right,” but far fewer claim that it’s “right” by itself.
The pro-life movement has been making steady progress in state legislatures and with some federal restrictions since the Supreme Court’s hideous Roe v. Wade decision in 1973 and under President Donald Trump’s administration that progress will likely continue.
What the evidence of the Las Llamas sacrifice really does is shatter one of the liberals’ most cherished myths.
It proves is that all religions are not created equal, and whatever evil the conquistadors might have brought to the New World, Christianity stamped out plenty when it got there.
