Ellen Just Donated Record Breaking $1 Million from Show to Their Cause

Share

Ellen DeGeneres has always been extremely generous to those in need. She isn’t just generous with her own money and time, and she also encourages others to do the same.

She often pairs up with companies like Lowe’s and Walmart to help people who are either going through a difficult time or have helped others in extraordinary ways.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve ugly cried watching a video of Ellen blessing someone unexpectedly. I usually watch them early in the morning before I’ve gotten out of bed, so I usually just blame my emotional state on a lack of caffeine. The truth is, I just love watching people react to such an amazing act of kindness and love.

“That’s what I like to do. I like to make people happy and laugh and then cry,” Ellen joked.

When Hurricane Harvey hit the coast of Texas in August of 2017, the damage was absolutely devastating. It caused about $125 billion in damage and was ranked as the second most costly hurricane to hit the United States since 1900, right behind Katrina.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott told “Good Morning America” that it would be a huge cleanup process. “People need to understand this is not going to be a short-term project. This is going to be a multi-year project for Texas to be able to dig out of this catastrophe,” he said.

People all over the country pulled together, donated money to relief organizations, and physically went to help jump start that process. Many celebrities also stepped up and contributed to the relief efforts.

Ellen was overwhelmed by how many people had been displaced because of Harvey. She donated $50,000 of her own money towards the Red Cross and SPCA of Texas and her daytime talk show donated another $25,000 to Red Cross.

In a heartfelt video, she encouraged her fans to do the same no matter the amount. “We love you, Texas,” she ended the video.

Her most recent donation shows that Ellen doesn’t just throw money towards a cause and wipe her hands of it. It shows that she genuinely cares about those who have been affected and wants to help in anyway she can.

So when she heard the story of the Rockport-Fulton High School varsity volleyball team, she knew she needed to help.

Their school had been directly hit during the storm. “The moment I realized how bad it was when we got pictures of our gym and it was just, just everywhere,” one of the girls said.

Their gym, the one where they had spent hours training and competing, had been completely destroyed.

The gym wasn’t just important to these young athletes, but also to the whole community.

Even so, the team didn’t give up hope. With the help of neighboring schools, they continued to train and compete even without a gym of their own.

Ellen was so moved by the girls’ determination and hope in the midst of such a difficult time that she decided to help. She teamed up with Lowe’s to help rebuild Rockport-Fulton’s gym.

Together they committed to donate one million dollars! It was the largest donation ever made on the show.

The sheer excitement and joy that the students and faculty reacted with shows how incredibly thankful they are. And yes, I cried.
