Unlike Dem Fat Cats, GOP Congresswoman Refuses Pay During Gov't Shutdown

Share

In response to the “Shumer shutdown,” one GOP House member announced over the weekend that she would refuse her pay for the duration of the government closure.

“In light of the unacceptable action taken by Senate Democrats to shut down the federal government, I have requested my pay be withheld until the #SchumerShutdown ends,” Virginia Rep. Barbara Comstock tweeted Saturday.

She likewise attached a letter addressed to Chief Administrative Officer Philip G. Kiko that outlined her opposition to whatever policy permits members of Congress to collect pay during a shutdown.

“Since I do not agree with that policy, please withhold my pay until an appropriations agreements has taken effect.”

Nicely done, although she’s not the only one. Other members of Congress have used Twitter to issue similar announcements.

Look:

Do you think Congress should be allowed to accept pay during a shutdown?

The News & Observer correctly noted Sunday that “(a)ll three are Republicans.”

Exactly. Though the Democrats manufactured this crisis by refusing to negotiate fairly with Republicans, most of them nevertheless intend to continue collecting their pay.

To be fair, though, at least two Democrats, Reps. Stephanie Murphy of Florida and Sean Patrick Malone of New York, also wanted their pay withheld, according to Western Journal. Other Republicans who did were Reps. Tom MacArthur, R-N.J., Dan Donovan, R-N.Y., and Lou Barletta.

As a reminder, the shutdown was triggered Saturday after the Senate failed to pass a continuing resolution that would have funded the government for another month and also extended the Children’s Health Insurance Program by six years.

According to CNN, the two sides reached an agreement Monday to re-open the government, but it didn’t come without Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s stubbornly resisting a deal.

Why? Because he demands that any deal “protects young undocumented immigrants from deportation,” as reported by Bloomberg.

Sen. Dick Durbin reiterated this very point in a tweet last week:

In other words, Schumer, Durbin and many more of their Democrats peers were willing to let the military languish without pay — even as they themselves collected pay — just to ensure their illegal immigrant constituents get what they want.

It’s appalling, especially in light of a CNN poll that found a 56 percent majority of Americans believe “approving a budget to avoid a government shutdown was more important for Congress to do than passing a bill to maintain the DACA program.”

Is that the Democrat priority? Of course not. Whether it’s “Russia, Russia, Russia,” or “DACA, DACA, DACA,” Democrats invariably prioritize all the wrong things. That’s perhaps why they’re a minority in Congress and will, hopefully, remain that way for a very long time coming.
