Adorable 3-Year-Old Sings His Little Heart Out to National Anthem at Football Game
Football fans poured into the stadium on Aug. 16 for a preseason football game between the Patriots and the Eagles.
The crowd was poised to listen to the national anthem sung by Boston police officer Kim Tavares.
Tavares is a well-known officer in the Boston area after her rendition of “God Bless America” went viral as she sang alongside partner Officer Stephen McNulty during a “cop-pool” karaoke session.
As the uniformed Tavares prepared to sing, what she didn’t know was that a tiny three-year-old Patriots fan was especially eager to participate in singing “The Star-Spangled-Banner” with her.
The boy’s name is Garrett Spence, and both of his parents are Boston police officers.
Donning his little Patriots jersey, with his hand over his heart, Garrett was ready for some heartfelt singing.
He belted out the lyrics, standing tall and singing loudly, making sure his little voice was heard.
It wasn’t long before the video of the tiny singer went viral. It soon reached the eyes and ears of Tavares, who jokingly dubbed the boy her new partner in crime.
“This is why I sing,” Tavares wrote on Twitter, reposting the video of Garrett singing. “Check out my new lil partner ‘G.'”
“His mom and dad are friends of mine,” Tavares wrote. “Both are police officers. Didn’t know they were at the game.”
Tavares was pretty proud of the little boy’s enthusiasm for the national anthem. “Teach them well and let them lead the way!” Tavares wrote.
Garrett’s police officer parents echoed Tavares’ words and told WBZ-TV what they thought about their son’s moment.
Michael Spence, the boy’s father, said he was “obviously very proud of his patriotism.”
Comments of praise have flooded in on behalf of the boy and the two adults who are parenting him in such a patriotic way.
In the eyes of many viewers, the Spence family is standing up for what makes America strong — respect for the country and the flag, combined with a willingness to serve and protect.
