Musician Plays Grand Piano on Frozen Lake in Captivating Video
Pianist YoungMin You has some loyal friends on his side — the type who are willing to wake up on a cold winter morning and lug a grand piano onto a frozen lake just so he could make a music video.
YoungMin, originally from South Korea, moved to America when he was just 15 to learn English. With no family in the states and limited English language at the time, YoungMin relied on his faith in God to walk him through the hard times.
YoungMin fell in love with the piano at age seven. His family could not afford formal piano lessons, so YoungMin taught himself to play and write music by watching countless YouTube videos.
“When I was ready to pursue music in college, I heard many people say I couldn’t do it because I lacked formal training,” YoungMin wrote on his website.
“But I just loved making music and seeing the impact it was having on others.”
YoungMin was accepted into the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music, what he called his “dream school.”
“I knew God had plans for me all along, and I know he still does!” the pianist wrote.
YoungMin, who now lives in Michigan, had the vision to create a music video of himself playing “Oceans,” by Hillsong United on a frozen lake.
He started a campaign on Kickstarter to fund not only the music video but the release of his first professional album, “Walk on Water.”
The campaign was so successful that YoungMin was able to make his frozen lake performance dream come true.
On a cold February morning, YoungMin’s friends arrived at his home to haul the massive, heavy instrument out the front door.
The piano was protected as best as possible underneath a thick layer of blankets and then hitched to a snowmobile.
The pace was slow, but little by little, the snowmobile hauled the piano to a beautiful winter wonderland on Walloon Lake in Charlevoix County, Michigan.
The move there (and back) was worth it, as YoungMin’s lovely performance of “Oceans” was a hit.
“I can’t believe we actually made this happen,” YoungMin said at the end of his performance. “God is so good!”
While moving pianos into wild places is fun and creative, YoungMin really aims to bring glory to God through his musical talents.
“I truly believe music is a gift from God,” the artist wrote. “Whether through my piano covers or original compositions, being able to share my music with people brings me so much joy.”
