Oprah Gave This Actress a Baby Gift So Big That U-Haul Had to Deliver It

Oprah Winfrey’s talk show giveaways will no doubt go down in history. Perhaps the most infamous of them all — the 2004 car giveaway — already has.

In the episode, Winfrey and the show producers pre-selected a whopping 276 people in need of a new car to attend the show.

On the day of filming, paramedics were on the scene in case any audience members had a medical emergency due to the shock of getting a free car.

Finally, the moment came. As audience members began pulling car keys out of their Oprah gift boxes, Winfrey famously began pointing and shouting into the crowd, “You get a car! And you get a car! And you get a car,” and so on and so forth.

That generous moment, of course, was not uncharacteristic of Winfrey, a name now nearly synonymous with generosity.

And it is this generosity that still leaves her fans in awe today, this time at the incredible baby gift she sent to her Wrinkle in Time co-star Mindy Kaling.

Back when Kaling was pregnant and doing press tours with Winfrey for their movie, it was Winfrey who accidentally spilled the beans about her pregnancy to the world.

But Kaling said she felt honored that it was Oprah herself who let it slip. “If anyone is going to announce big news about your private life, Oprah Winfrey is the person,” she said during an appearence on Ellen.

In a recent interview, Kaling revealed that after her baby girl, Katherine, was born in December, she received a call from her assistant regarding Winfrey’s gift.

“I got a call from my assistant. She said, ‘Oprah’s assistant contacted me, she’d like to drop off a present,’” Kaling said. “I’m thinking, that’s so nice, like, (it’s) probably flowers. I had a kid, I’m a single mom. That’s really nice Oprah remembered.”

But Kaling was in for a big surprise. The present was so large, it would be arriving in a U-Haul with two delivery men to help bring it inside her home.

“All you want in life is to hear that two men in a U-Haul truck are coming to your house because Oprah sent them,” she said. “I was supposed to go to work that day (but I was like), I gotta be here.”

And according to the actress, the gift went far beyond her expectations.

“They arrived with a hand-carved bookcase, prettier than any professional dollhouse you had ever seen that contained a hundred of the classic essential books in children’s literature,” Kaling explained. “And I held my baby up to it and I said, ‘Did you see what Ms. Winfrey did for you?’ Each book has ‘Katherine’s Book Club’ on it.”

In A Wrinkle in Time, Kaling’s character, Mrs. Who, lives in a tree. Winfrey’s incredibly thoughtful gift is meant to look like that very tree house, making the present that much more special.

Winfrey says it is not quite as perfectly matched to the character’s home as she would like. But Kaling is absolutely touched by the gesture.

“It’s the most amazing gift,” Kaling said.
