Video: Dem Candidate Knocked Out Cold After Picking Fight at Beach, Then Arrested for Allegedly Pulling Knife, Threatening Woman
Kirill Basin was being called a “longshot” Hawaiian congressional candidate by the media before this past weekend. Now, the long shot is that he stays out of jail.
In a viral confrontation caught on video, the Democrat, 40, got knocked out with one punch after he picked a fight with the wife of a man who told him to turn down his music at a Maui beach.
Reports indicated that the man had threatened to shoot the woman and allegedly pulled a knife on her.
He’s now being held on $1 million bail, according to Hawaii News Now, an amount that remained unchanged after a Tuesday court appearance in Wailuku. He’s charged with first-degree terroristic threats.
The Democrat had hoped to unseat the incumbent, Rep. Jill Tokuda, in the primary for Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District.
The incident reportedly began when an unidentified 61-year-old man asked Basin to turn down his music at Keawakapu Beach on Saturday.
Basin responded badly, including by implying that he not only had a gun on him but would use it to shoot the wife of the man who complained.
The fight ended quickly when a man identified only as Kama — a construction worker who does mixed martial arts — decided to put an end to the threat.
“I’m like, maybe I should intervene, and then as I got closer and closer, he was just getting more irate and violent and then saying stuff. ‘I’m going to hurt you’ or ‘I can injure you’ or ‘You like scrap’ to the aunties,” Kama said.
“He put his hands on me and as soon as he tried to shove me, I hit him with a left and a right and that’s when he stumbled and fell over the chairs.”
But not before Basin used one of the chairs as a weapon:

“Just block it and go for the KO. Just protect myself, which is why I had my hand up and then I adjusted to block the chair,” Kama said about the block.
Maui police said that not only did Basin threaten the man and his wife with the knife that he had, but also made the threat to several other people. He allegedly threw the blade into the ocean, although Kama recovered it and turned it over to police.
“He ended up pulling the knife out on me after the altercation and that was obviously a game changer when I knew he was off,” he said.
You won’t be surprised that Basin has been arrested numerous times for making violent threats — including against government officials, Civil Beat reported — and was ordered by the court to undergo a mental health assessment after the latest arrest.
Of course, what insurgent Democrat candidate shouldn’t be forced to undergo a mental health assessment at this point? This may be the worst of them we’ve seen so far, but he’s far from the only loony.
“Violence has no place in our communities or in public service,” Tokuda, his primary opponent, said in a statement.
“Anyone holding or seeking office, at any level of government, should be held to a higher standard. Our communities deserve leaders who bring people together, not those who contribute to further division or violence.”
Meanwhile, Basin’s lawyer, Brandon Segal, called the $1 million bail “outrageous.”
“These are just allegations. My client has a presumption of innocence,” he said.
Yes, well, innocent until proven guilty — but you’ve seen the video, and it doesn’t look good. That, on top of the other allegations, makes it a difficult case for letting this guy out again.
As for a replacement on the ballot, may we present Kama? He didn’t just act in the face of danger, he did so out of a sense of duty.
“You do what’s right because that’s what we should do and that’s my whole motto in life,” he told the media.
Sure, he wouldn’t fit in with the Democrats, but he’d be an upgrade for Congress.
