Ex-NBA champ goes off after drug bust - 'just mad because a black man got money'

Share

A quarter pound of marijuana, a suitcase full of cash and a ledger of client names does not a drug dealer make.

At least that’s what former NBA star Glen “Big Baby” Davis wants you to believe after news reports this past week revealed Davis had been arrested last month and charged with seven counts of drug possession and distribution.

At the time of his arrest, Davis’ lawyer said his client would be able to clear his name in court.

Saturday, Davis said a more colorful version of the same thing — not just in terms of language, but also in visual context.

Davis posted an Instagram video of himself on a private jet, sitting next to an open brief case filled with cash, while dining on some not-so-luxurious Popeye’s friend chicken.

“Don’t believe all that s— on the internet,” Davis said in the video. “I will have my day in court. They just mad because a black man got money, man. Just trying to keep a black man down, man.

“My s— legal, man. A lot of jump shots. A whole lot of jump shots.”

He has since deleted the video from his Instagram account.

Is Glen Davis mocking police with his Instagram video?

Davis was arrested Feb. 7 at a hotel in Aberdeen, Maryland, after the hotel’s owner called police after smelling marijuana coming from the room.

Police reported finding 126 grams of marijuana in Davis’ possession and a briefcase containing $92,164 in cash.

“They recovered 126 grams of marijuana,” Aberdeen Police Lt. William Reiber told WMAR-TV in Baltimore. “In addition to that, there was a briefcase that contained $92,164 of U.S. currency along with a ledger that contained language which is consistent with someone involved in the sale and distribution of narcotics.”

The station reported that the ledger included names of people who owed money along with baggies for individual packaging of a quarter pound of marijuana.

Davis played eight seasons in the NBA. After playing his collegiate basketball at LSU, he was drafted in the second round by Seattle in 2007 but was traded to Boston, where he spent the first four seasons of his NBA career.

Davis won an NBA title with the Celtics as a rookie. He went on to play for Orlando and the Los Angeles Clippers, where his career ended in 2015.

His court date is scheduled for early April, according to WMAR.
