Police Rescue Toddler After Mother's Bizarre 911 Call: 'My Kid Is Stuck in a Toy'
Toys are all fun and games… until they aren’t. They break or simply stop working. Or, in one toddler’s case, they become the reason for a call to 911.
Twenty-month-old Luca from Fort Lee, New Jersey, was playing with his activity cube toy when he found himself in an unexpected tight spot.
The top of the toy that is meant to teach kids about shapes was off. The curious toddler then discovered he could fit inside. The problem, however, arose when he couldn’t figure out a way to reverse his predicament.
“It’s kind of comical if you think about the situation,” Soona Choe, the boy’s mom, shared with CBS2. “He got in, got wedged in, and he couldn’t get out.”
Choe didn’t have the tools to get him loose and was afraid he’d be injured if she tried to get him out herself. So, like any good parent, this mom called for backup.
“I call 911 and say ‘my kid is stuck in a toy,”‘ Choe explained. “And they’re like ‘what kind of toy? What do you mean?’”
Though it seemed she felt a little silly making the call, it appears she did the right thing. Fort Lee Police Department’s Sgt. Rick Hernandez came to the rescue.
“I was panicking, I had to get him out, you know,” Choe told WABC. “So, I had no choice. I didn’t have the tools.”
Thankfully, Sgt. Hernandez knew what to do. “It was his knees and his legs underneath the lip on one side,” the officer told WABC.
“And his back was stuck up against the other side. So trying to pull him out would’ve caused injury to either the legs or the back,” he went on.
In the end, the quick-thinking sergeant broke the front panel off the cube. It was at that point Luca’s grandmother screamed in surprise at the noise.
But, even with all the commotion, the almost-2-year-old ended up being all right. Choe is grateful for Sgt. Hernandez’s help.
She also shared she won’t be letting her son forget this experience any time in the near future. In fact, she plans to bring up the humorous ordeal on his wedding day.
We’re glad Luca is safe and all is well. As for the cube toy, as a mom myself I’ll probably be steering clear of ones like it. Do your kids have a toy like this one? What do you think about what happened?
