Baker Mayfield reveals what made him hang up on Brett Favre's agent

Share

In the months leading up to the 2018 NFL draft, there were likely countless agents fighting for the chance to represent Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield.

But it would appear that not all of them did their homework before contacting the 2017 Heisman Trophy winner.

At the start of a recent episode of his Facebook series “Behind Baker,” Mayfield detailed how Hall-of-Fame quarterback Brett Favre’s agent, Bus Cook, gave him a call.

However, Cook made one crucial error that prompted Mayfield to hang up the phone almost immediately.

“Bus Cook, Brett Favre’s agent, great story. Every agent does the same thing, they give their resume, what they’re about, all this stuff,” Mayfield recounted. “Finally, when he was about to give me a chance to talk, he asked, ‘So, when did Bob Stoops start recruiting you?’”

Cook was referring to former Sooners head coach Bob Stoops, who Mayfield played under. But as those familiar with the quarterback’s story know, Mayfield was by no means a highly regarded recruit. Rather, he was a walk-on, both at Oklahoma and his previous school, Texas Tech.

So when Cook asked about Mayfield’s recruitment phase, the quarterback was understandably put off.

“I literally — I said, ‘Excuse me?’ And he repeated the question.” And then I said, ‘Yeah, I gotta go.’ And I just hung up,” he said. “It’s like, if you’re going to pursue a guy and say that you want him and you want to be that guy that’s going to be there for him, why not do your research?”

In the end, Mayfield did end up finding a sports agency he liked, as he’s currently represented by Capital Sports Advisors, according to USA Today.

But it hasn’t always been sunshine and roses for the NFL draft prospect, who didn’t receive scholarship offers from any big-time Power 5 conference colleges coming out of high school.

Do you think the Browns will take Baker Mayfield with the top pick in the draft?

That didn’t stop him, though, from putting up gaudy stats in each of his three seasons as Oklahoma’s starter under center. In his time with the Sooners, Mayfield accounted for nearly 13,000 total yards and 135 touchdowns. He also led his team to the College Football Playoff twice.

“He’s been everything you wish for in a quarterback,” Stoops told OU Daily. “He has energy, brings energy, makes everybody around him better. Keeps everybody interested and excited.”

Mayfield has a world of talent, to be sure, and on Thursday, we’ll finally see just how highly teams think of him.

According to Cleveland.com, which cited league sources, the Browns are going to use their first overall draft pick on either Mayfield or Wyoming’s Josh Allen.

Wherever he ends up, it should be incredibly fun to see what Mayfield can do in the NFL.
