CNN Host Goes Off-Script: 'I Don't See Any Evidence' of Russian Collusion

Share

CNN host Jake Tapper deviated from the left-wing narrative Thursday night and expressed doubt that Michael Cohen’s guilty plea was evidence of collusion between President Donald Trump and Russia.

Jake Tapper introduced Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York to discuss the new findings in the ongoing Russia probe led by special counsel Robert Mueller.

Cohen pleaded guilty to lying to Congress when he said Trump stopped pursuing plans to build a Trump Tower in Moscow after January 2016. Cohen admitted that the plans kept going until June 2016.

“Look, this is clearly not welcome news for the president,” Tapper said. “I don’t want to pretend that it is, but once again I look at these documents and I don’t see any evidence of conspiracy between members of the Trump team and members of the Russian government to interfere in the election.”

Tapper is right. So far, no evidence has been presented that proves any collusion took place between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

Trump’s canceled plan to build a hotel in Russia isn’t a new revelation and it doesn’t prove that Trump was involved in any election meddling.

“What he has admitted to is that he was negotiating a corrupt business deal on behalf of the president during the campaign,” Nadler responded.

Do you think Tapper will get in trouble with CNN?

“You call it a corrupt business deal?” Tapper pressed.

“The fact that it was negotiated with a foreign power while you’re running for president,” Nadler continued.

“Not illegal. You mean like more just colloquially corrupt?” Tapper asked. Nadler responded in the affirmative.

If they’re pressed hard enough, even Democratic representatives can agree that there is currently no evidence of illegal activity from Trump, but I never thought Tapper would be the person to press them.

“But still no conspiracy?” Tapper asked.

Nadler attempted to fire back by saying Trump was changing the Republican platform to “favor the Russians” while pursuing his hotel.

“Sure, it stinks, but it’s not a conspiracy is all I’m saying,” Tapper said.

Tapper might take some heat from CNN for his comments, but he is not the only one to point out that Cohen’s plea agreement still is not evidence of collusion.

On Friday, Trump’s legal representative, Rudy Giuliani, described the coverage of Cohen’s plea as “hysterical” and said that Mueller’s probe has only obtained guilty pleas on false statements, and has not actually uncovered any evidence of Russian collusion during the 2016 presidential campaign.

“It misses point that, once again like Corsi leaked documents demonstrate, Mueller’s crew has no evidence of collusion. Along the way, however, he is keeping America safe from false statement makers or people with faulty memories or both,” Giuliani tweeted

Former Harvard professor and constitutional lawyer Alan Dershowitz said it’s still not clear that Trump has committed any crime.

“This is politically damaging, but I’m not sure how legally damaging it is,” Dershowitz said, according to the Chronicle. “This is all about questionable political behavior. It’s a good reason for people voting against Trump. But I don’t see a crime yet.”
