Jim Kelly's daughter gives update on father's condition no one saw coming

Share

NFL great Jim Kelly has been on a remarkable road to recovery after undergoing 12 hours of surgery on March 28 to remove a recurrence of oral cancer.

Last week, Kelly was released from Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, a little over two weeks after having surgery to remove the cancer and reconstruct his jaw.

Now, a new Instagram post by his daughter, Erin Kelly-Bean, shows how much progress the Buffalo Bills legend is making after his release.

She posted a photo of her father not only up and about, but lifting weights.

“Kelly tough,” wrote Erin. “So proud of him!!! Healing every day!”

Jim’s wife, Jill, also posted a photo showing the Hall of Fame quarterback working out on an exercise bike.

“Progress! And Prayer! Two vital components of this journey,” she wrote. “He works harder and is more focused than anyone I know. He never gives up!”

Kelly had cancer removed from his upper jaw and lymph nodes, and then had his jaw restructured.

It was a recurrence of squamous cell carcinoma that was similar to the type of cancer he had surgically removed from his upper left jaw in 2015. It was the third time he has had surgery to remove oral cancer. The first was in 2013.

After last month’s surgery, Kelly had to eat through a feeding tube until April 14. Two days later, he was released from the hospital.

“Mr. Kelly was discharged from the hospital today after an extremely favorable recovery,” Dr. Mark Urken, the surgeon at Mount Sinai who treated Kelly, told reporters.

“The speed of that process, considering the extensive nature of his surgery, was a function of his toughness, the firmness of his resolve, his faith and the support of his family,” Urken said. “All of those factors will continue to serve him well as he moves on to the next phase of his rehabilitation.”

Kelly is truly an inspiration. Best of luck to him in his recovery.
