3 Bear Cubs Take Over Golf Course for Playtime, Make Off with Flag
Bears aren’t usually the first thing that pop into your mind when thinking about spending a day at the golf course.
But if you’re playing in Anchorage, Alaska, perhaps it’s the second thing.
One man who decided to head out to play at Moose Run Golf Course was one person who’d spotted bears on a previous golf trip.
But Alaska native Stefan Trevor was in for quite the surprise when a family of black bears decided they wanted to do more than simply watch from the sidelines this time.
In a video captured by Trevor, one cub comes out onto the course and begin to play with the flagstick. While he’s met with some resistance at first, he continues to wrestle with the stick hoping it will eventually pop out for him to take home.
After a tiring amount of attempting to convince the stick to come loose, Bear #1 looks as though he’s about to give up. But soon, in strolls Bear #2 to mix things up.
The two bears begin to wrestle with one another, seeming to forget about the flagstick for just a moment. But then it becomes clear that Bear #1 was simply looking to defend what he’d come to claim, and quickly ventures back to the stick.
Even so, Bear #2 seems uninterested in Bear #1’s findings. Soon the camera pans over to Bear #3 entering the scene. When the video refocuses on Bears # 1 and #2, it looks as though they’ve gotten into a fight over the glorious red flag on top of the stick.
As Bear #3 approaches, Bears #1 and #2 continue to fight for the flag when suddenly, they bend the stick enough that the flag comes flying off the top.
Bears #1 and #2 appear to forget about the flag once again, getting distracted and wrestling with one another a second time. Meanwhile, Bear #3 sees her opportunity and swoops in to capture the flag for herself.
But soon, Bear #3 realizes how much fun her bear brothers are having and drops the flag to join in. The three bears fight for the flag, and ultimately, it’s Bear #2 who comes out victorious.
Bears #2 and #3 appear to retreat back into the woods, but Bear #1 soon realizes his upsetting loss was caught on tape. The video ends as Bear #1 begins running in the direction of the camera.
Thankfully, Trevor reports that he left the course when the bears got too close — presumably when Bear #1 began to chase at him.
While the bears’ silly playtime antics were certainly entertaining, they also held a deeper meaning for Trevor. Trevor no longer lives in Alaska, but returned that week for his grandfather’s funeral.
“As sad as this all is, it was such a blessing and wonderful experience with the bears yesterday. My dad was a true outdoorsman and we knew he was watching down on Trevor (Saturday),” Trevor’s mother, Alissa Stefan, said.
“I’ve never seen them playing around like that before,” Trevor said. “It was pretty funny.”
