How President Trump Will Get Mexico to Pay for the Wall

Share

President Donald Trump has claimed since his 2016 presidential campaign that he would make Mexico pay for a wall along our nation’s southern border to stem illegal immigration.

Liberals scoffed at the president’s remarks, but several ideas about how to make this happen have surfaced.

Speaking with The Wall Street Journal on Thursday, Trump said renegotiating NAFTA could be one way to pay for the wall.

“They can pay for it indirectly through NAFTA,” Trump told The Journal, as reported by the Washington Examiner.

“We make a good deal on NAFTA, and, say, I’m going to take a small percentage of that money and it’s going toward the wall. Guess what? Mexico’s paying,” he explained.

“I’ve always said we have to have a wall. I’ve also said Mexico’s got to pay for it. Well, they will pay for it. There are many forms of payment, I could name 10 right now,” Trump added.

Indeed, the president has offered up other options to make Mexico pay for the wall.

One option that has been floated around is the creation of an import tariff with a provision stating that the funds would be used to pay for the wall.

Trump has even threatened to cut off money transfers sent to Mexico by immigrants living in the United States by expanding a provision of the Patriot Act.

Are you hoping the border wall comes to fruition?

As liberals balk at the idea, Trump sticks to his word — and his plan.

Eight prototypes of the wall, between 18 and 30 feet high, have been assembled outside San Diego, NBC News reported in October.

Trump reportedly plans to visit the prototypes later this month.

He has also requested approximately $18 billion to build the wall along the 316 mile long border between the U.S. and Mexico.

Trump has made it crystal clear to congressional Democrats that he would not approve a congressional fix for the Deferred Action for Childhood if there was no funding for his wall.

Building the wall was one of Trump’s signature campaign promises and it looks like he is working toward making good on his word, proving where there’s a will, there’s a way.
