ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday that Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Shazier has regained movement in his legs and is walking again.

“He’s making incredible progress,” a source familiar with Shazier’s recovery told ESPN.

Shazier was discharged from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center rehabilitation facility Thursday and will transition to outpatient care, the hospital announced.

Shazier will return home and travel to and from his rehabilitation treatments.

The ESPN report did not specify if Shazier was walking with assistance or on his own.

Shazier’s family has not released any specifics about his condition.

Shazier announced his release from the hospital via Instagram.

“I want everyone to know that I’m moving on to the next step of the process,” Shazier wrote in his post. “Today’s a big day for me as I’m officially being released from the hospital.”

He also thanked a number of people for their help and support during his recovery, beginning with God.

“First and foremost, I want to thank God because at the end of the day I don’t think I’d be making progress without His vision and hands protecting me and my family. I will continue to trust in Him and thank Him, because it all starts with Him,” Shazier said.

Shazier was injured Dec. 4 in a game at Cincinnati when he made what appeared to be a routine tackle. He immediately lost feeling in his legs and had to be taken to a hospital in an ambulance.

An official diagnosis of Shazier was never released by doctors, but teammates said he suffered a spinal concussion.

Shazier had spinal stabilization surgery Dec. 6.

At last Sunday’s Pro Bowl, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger wore cleats that honored Shazier as well as Dan Rooney, the late Steelers owner.

Prior to the Pro Bowl, Roethlisberger paid tribute to Shazier in an interview with ESPN.

“There’s one guy that’s supposed to be here that’s not here but hopefully is watching, and that’s Ryan,” Roethlisberger said. “Ryan, we love you, we’ve got you on our cleats, we’ve got you on our shirts. We’re loving you, buddy.”
