Tim Tebow Officially Learns His Assignment for Opening Day

“Given all of Tim Tebow’s various ventures, including television and charity work, it’s sometimes easy to forget that the man also has a burgeoning baseball career.

As a refresher, the last time we saw Tebow on a baseball field, he was smashing a home run in a New York Mets minor league spring training game.

That particular home run came after Tebow had learned that the Mets were cutting him from their major league spring training roster. As usual, he was gracious even in demotion and reflected on how important the experience was.

“I think (I’ve gained) so much more experience, and the opportunity to work every day, and then try to perform as well,” Tebow told reporters in mid-March after his reassignment to the minors. “But just I think the learning aspect of it and just being able to learn from all the players and coaches and really just take it as a huge opportunity to go and get better.”

Despite his optimistic attitude, some were left wondering about Tebow’s immediate baseball future given his reassignment.

Now we know: The Triple-A Syracuse Mets announced Friday that the 31-year-old outfielder has made their Opening Day roster and will take the field against the Pawtucket Red Sox on Thursday.

The team described Tebow as “one of the most highly-anticipated names” to crack the 25-man roster, which is quite a compliment given the extensive accolades of other players on the Syracuse roster.

Will Tim Tebow be called up to the majors this year?

Tebow’s teammates include players such as Carlos Gomez, a two-time All-Star, and Gregor Blanco, a two-time World Series champion.

Many are expecting Tebow to improve upon a solid season for the Double-A Binghamton Rumble Ponies. In 84 games, he hit .273 with six home runs and 36 RBIs last year.

While his season was unfortunately cut short due to a hand injury, Tebow was still able to garner an Eastern League All-Star berth. The Mets prospect had a solid showing in the All-Star game.

Assuming Tebow continues on his current trajectory, he could get a major league call-up at some point this season.

Given what all of his haters have had to say about his baseball career, that would be a pretty sweet accomplishment for Tim Tebow.
