Under Obama Twinkies Tanked, Under Trump They're Giving Raises

Share

It was a dark day in America when the announcement came that Hostess was going belly-up. Fans of the popular snack cake flooded stores and supermarkets to get their hands on the last few boxes of the golden bar of goodness.

The year was 2012 and Barack Obama was the sitting president. While Hostess, the maker of Twinkies, Ding Dongs, and other delicious snack cakes, did come back, it wasn’t near the employee level it once was.

In fact, The Washington Post reported that when things got really bad, Hostess had to cut its employees from 8,000 down to 1,170. But even 8,000 employees was down from where they once were.

At this point, the company was a “shadow of a once-vast empire, which shortly before its troubles totaled 22,000 workers across more than 40 bakeries,” The Post reported.

Fast forward 6 years later and a new president and Congress are governing, and Hostess has drastically changed its direction.

After the GOP tax cuts last December, companies around the U.S. have given out bonuses to employees in droves. The once hurting Hostess is one company that joined the crowd in giving out bonuses.

According to Fox News, the snack cake giant announced that it would be giving a $1,250 bonus to a majority of its hourly employees. That’s a far cry from cutting the workforce by 75 percent like it did under the Obama administration.

But for Hostess employees, the deal gets even sweeter. Literally.

The company announced that in addition to the monetary bonus, employees will be given a year supply of snack cakes including Hostess CupCakes, Fruit Pies and Donettes.

Have you been a beneficiary of the GOP tax cuts?

Feel like changing jobs? Yeah, me too.

“Each week, the company said it will select a ‘product of week’ and provide a multi-pack for every employee to bring home,” Fox News reported.

Talk about perks.

Of course, the company was quick to explain why they are being so generous: President Trump’s tax cuts.

“The recent tax-reform changes have given us the opportunity to review our benefit and compensation structure,” Hostess CEO Daren Metropoulos said in a statement,

He continued, “The company’s management and board take great pleasure in sharing the company’s success with our employees.”

Make no mistake, the economy is booming under President Trump, and this is just another great example of that. Thanks to the GOP tax cuts, employees are seeing more take home pay and bonuses from their employers.

For employees at Hostess, these tax cuts have quite literally left a sweet taste in their mouths.

Now, if you will excuse me, I think I need to go and find an job application for Hostess.
