When Woman Notices Teen in Prom Dress Pumping Own Gas, She Steps In and Makes Her Night

Prom night is a big deal and has been a big deal ever since the big high-school dance became an annual event. And since it’s such a big deal, it’s a prime time for drama.

Think of all the tears that get shed and the friendships that fracture due to competitions over dates or decisions over dresses. Indeed, one Lexington, North Carolina, girl almost found her prom night ruined not once, but twice.

According to KHOU, 17-year-old Devin Bennett had everything ready. She wore her sequined, electric blue dress and a corsage around her wrist.

She had her blonde hair put into an up-do and her makeup perfectly applied. In other words, she was ready for prom.

But then disaster struck. For one reason or another, the guy who intended to take her reportedly reneged.

“I had a date but he kind of ditched me,” Bennett said to KHOU. That’s a bigger deal than those of us who aren’t in high school might realize.

See, in addition to its emotional importance, prom costs a lot of money. CreditDonkey reports that households spend an average of nearly $1,000 on the event.

And that big sum isn’t paid solely by parents. Teens typically foot about half of the bill.

But despite it all, Bennett decided she would follow through and attend prom anyway.

However, she ran into another problem on her way to the event: She discovered that her car was basically running on fumes.

Ever the trooper, Bennett pulled into a Sheetz gas station, ready to brave the inevitable dirt and grime around a gas pump. Her photographer, following behind in another car, snapped pics of her gamely pumping fuel into her Nissan.

Bennett even grinned widely for the camera, making the best of a less-than-ideal situation. That was when someone stepped in and made her night far better through a simple act of kindness.

“This woman walked up and was like, ‘Honey! Why are you doing that?!’” Bennett explained. “She said, ‘You’re too pretty to be doing that. You don’t want to ruin your dress.’”

The woman grabbed the nozzle and began to pump Bennett’s gas for her and strike up a conversation, a gesture that filled the girl with appreciation.

“It made my day because of the fact that I was going by myself and just having someone to help gave me a little more hope,” she said. Bennett went on to the prom and had a great time.

Afterward, Bennet’s mother Nikki Sykes Bennett posted a picture of the good Samaritan to the North Davidson County Community Facebook group in an attempt to identify her. It turned out that people easily recognized her.

Her name was (appropriately enough) Sherry Allgood. “She’s actually pretty known around here for being nice,” Bennett said.

According to KHOU, Bennett later shared the photos with Allgood and let her know how much the seemingly small gesture meant to her.
