Steve Irwin's Little Girl Is Getting Married! Bindi Announces Engagement on 21st Birthday

The Irwins have a history of meeting their spouses at zoos. In 1991, Steve Irwin was working at his family’s wildlife park when an American named Terri waltzed through and changed his life forever.

According to The Crocodile Hunter website, it was “love at first sight” for the power couple who soon became well-known for their enthusiasm, conservation work and adorable kiddos.

Now, it’s happening again. A Florida native visited the Australia Zoo in 2013, and as soon as he saw Bindi Irwin, he knew his life had changed.

“It just so happened that Bindi was giving tours that day,” Chandler Powell told People. “I’m like, ‘Wow she is amazing.’ We haven’t looked back since.”

Athletic and an animal lover, Chandler fits right in with the khaki-clad crew. He even moved to Australia to be closer to Bindi and join in with the family’s conservation efforts — though he did have to pass Robert’s test first.

“One of the first times Chandler came to the zoo I wanted to kind of test him,” Robert said. “Just to see what would happen. So we had him feeding alligators and he did awesome. I’m very impressed. He’s great with wildlife so I approve.”

“He loves wildlife and conservation and he has this strength,” Bindi said. “Which is necessary when you’re jumping on crocs.”

For her birthday this year, Chandler planned an amazing surprise. Bindi turned 21 on July 24, and Chandler marked it with a one-of-a-kind gift.

“After Bindi’s birthday celebration at Australia Zoo, we had a photoshoot organized to celebrate her turning 21,” Chandler told People. “Just before we started the shoot, I took her to a special part of Australia Zoo to ask the girl of my dreams to become my wife.

“These past five years together have been the best of my life and we look forward to a lifetime of magical moments to come.”

Bindi said yes, and shared the wonderful news on Twitter.

“On my birthday I said ‘yes’ & ‘forever’ to the love of my life,” she tweeted. “Chandler, close to 6 years ago I fell in love with you & every day since has been a whirlwind of adventure & true happiness. Here’s to a lifetime of friendship, purpose & unconditional love.”

The whole family seems to approve of the proposed union and is quite happy to officially have Chandler join the family.

Terri Irwin posted a photo of the four of them on Twitter and made sure to point out that Steve would’ve been elated over the news as well.

Steve would probably be thrilled to invite another person into the family who is so passionate about their cause and probably would’ve been tickled that both he and his daughter met the people they love while doing what they love.

“I’ve met my soulmate and I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with Chandler,” Bindi said. “We’ve been together for nearly 6 years now and he’s my happily ever after.”
