Watch: Tiger Woods drains fantastic shot, makes young fan's day

Share

Tiger Woods has shown flashes of the old Tiger on numerous occasions since returning from back surgery last year.

Another of those moments came Wednesday on the eighth hole of the Memorial pro-am at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Ohio.

Woods missed the green but made up for it with a sweet chip-in from the rough.

He then did something even sweeter, retrieving the ball and tossing it to a young girl in the gallery named Ashby.

The shot might be a good omen for Tiger’s short game: He’s using his new TaylorMade Milled Grind wedges for the first time in competition.

Woods was playing with someone who can relate to his spinal fusion surgery struggles: former NFL star Peyton Manning.

After nine holes with Tiger, the future Hall of Famer was impressed.

“He’s playing great,” Manning said. “He had an unbelievable chip-in back there on 8. It looked like an impossible lie to the amateur. It appeared to be an easy shot for him.”

Manning, who won a Super Bowl after neck fusion surgery, said he understands how difficult Tiger’s comeback has been.

“I can certainly relate,” he said. “It’s about being flexible, being adaptive. I couldn’t throw the ball the same way after my injury. You learn to use your experience and your football intellect.”

The two superstars also enjoyed needling each other. For example, Woods mocked Manning’s TrackMan numbers.

Tiger, who is paired with Justin Rose and Jason Dufner, is set to tee off at 8:26 a.m. Eastern time Thursday as the Memorial gets underway.
