No. 5 Tennessee's Players Get Baptized - 'Far More Important Than Any Win We've Ever Had'

Share

In the infantile stages of the 2018-2019 college basketball season, there have been some early standouts.

Duke has emerged as an early favorite, powered by outstanding freshmen like Zion Williamson.

Kansas is as strong as it’s ever been. North Carolina is still lurking. A talented Gonzaga team helped hand Duke its first loss of the season.

While the aforementioned teams have been fixtures in college basketball recently, it’s not too often you hear about Tennessee basketball unless you’re discussing the school’s dominant women’s teams.

This year, however, the Volunteers have been as good as any college basketball blue blood. As of this writing, they are undefeated at 5-0 and are ranked No. 5 in the nation.

Amid their sterling on-court success this year, however, has been some significant off-court success as well.

In the middle of their undefeated start to the season, two of Tennessee’s key players got baptized.

Volunteers star Grant Williams shared on social media that two of his teammates, Kyle Alexander and Jordan Bowden, dedicated their lives to Jesus Christ.

“Man what a day,” Williams posted on Instagram. “(Tennessee women’s) Soccer advances to the elite 8, thanksgiving team dinner, then two of my brothers were baptized and took a step closer to the lord.”

Williams concluded his post with just how much he valued his team.

“This Vol family is something i cherish and we’re just getting started,” he wrote.

Alexander confirmed his baptism on social media as well.

“God You’re Good,” Alexander posted on Instagram.

It’s always good to see sports teams value the important things that go beyond the sport itself. That type of leadership typically comes from the top, and Tennessee is no different.

Volunteers head coach Rick Barnes shared just how much it meant for him to see his players get baptized.

Barnes called the baptisms of Alexander and Bowden “far more important than any win we’ve ever had.” Frankly, he is 100 percent correct.

Sports careers all end sometime, occasionally in the blink of an eye. But a relationship with Jesus Christ is literally forever.

Kyle Alexander and Jordan Bowden seem keenly aware of this. Good for them.
